Many thanks to all of you folks for your great help. You might be best advised to uninstall everything relating to VirtualBox and start again from scratch but see what RIH has to say as he is more of an expert than I am in the field of virtual systems. by loading them into your dvd drive once you have that up and running in your guest system.
Compatible drivers for peripherals such as printers and scanners can easily be installed into the guest Windows system either by downloading them or, if you have them on CD. Certainly for XP in my virtual system there was no problem accessing and running the dvd drive but the drive is an internal one, I don't know if you are attempting to use an external dvd because that could be a problem if it is connected via usb. Regarding your switch to Windows Vista in preference to Windows 7 as your Windows guest, I don't believe you would have a driver problem. Afterwards, when you are back in the Windows guest environment, you proceed as RIH has stated in his post.
I believe you attempted to install WGA from within your Windows guest environment - if it was showing as not installed in the Synaptic window then the correct method would be to install it via Synaptic while in your Linux environment. Sorry for your problems and any misunderstanding of what I suggested earlier but I said check in Synaptic - this was to see if Windows Guest Additions (WGA) was shown as installed.
