Compatible drivers for peripherals such as printers and scanners can easily be installed into the guest Windows system either by downloading them or, if you have them on CD. I believe you attempted to install WGA from within your Windows guest environment - if it was showing as not installed in the Synaptic window then the correct method would be to install it via Synaptic while in your Linux environment. Sorry for your problems and any misunderstanding of what I suggested earlier but I said check in Synaptic - this was to see if Windows Guest Additions (WGA) was shown as installed.
